How to Make a Ruffle Crop Top
Making a top or a crop top is one of those projects most of us end up trying when we start sewing. In general, tops are usually quick and beginner-friendly, and there’s nothing better than making something easy, cute, and wearable in a short amount of time.
Learn How to Sew a Top Step by Step
The pattern for this top includes only two main pieces: one for the outer ruffle and one for the stretchy inner top.
Like many of my patterns, this one is beginner-friendly. You only need to know how to insert elastic to adjust the top around the shoulders and bust.
So yes, I really meant it when I said it was easy.
Lexa Ruffle Top Sewing Tutorial
In this video, you can follow the full step-by-step tutorial to sew the Lexa Top. You can find the sewing pattern in my shop.
GET THE PATTERN
As you can see, it’s a very simple project, but the final result looks beautiful.
The pattern I created has a softer ruffle with less volume because I wanted a cleaner, smoother look. However, if you prefer a fuller ruffle, you can simply add a few extra inches to the ruffle pattern piece.
What Materials Do I Need?
For this sewing pattern, you’ll need two types of fabric: one for the outer ruffle and one for the inner top.
For the outer ruffle, you can use lightweight fabrics such as crepe, satin, or viscose.
For the inner top, you’ll need a stretchy fabric such as scuba knit, Lycra, or stretch cotton.
You’ll also need matching thread for your sewing machine. If you’re using a serger, make sure to use thread that matches your fabric as well.
Finally, you’ll need elastic for the neckline/shoulder area and the bust. I recommend using 1 cm / 3/8 in wide elastic. The elastic color can be chosen depending on the fabric you use.
Additional Tools
You’ll also need a few basic sewing tools:
| Tool | What it’s for |
|---|---|
| Sewing machine | To sew the main seams |
| Rotary cutter or fabric scissors | To cut your fabric pieces |
| Measuring tape | To check your body and elastic measurements |
| Printer paper | To print your PDF sewing pattern |
| Pins or clips | To hold the fabric in place while sewing |
