What Paper Sizes Do Sewing Patterns Come In?
AlphaPatterns sewing patterns are designed so you can print them at home or send them to a copy shop. But one thing that can be confusing the first time you buy a PDF sewing pattern is the paper size.
Not every country uses the same standard paper size, so the file you need will depend on where you live and how you want to print your pattern.
If you’re not sure which file to use, here’s a simple guide.
Which File Should I Print?
When you buy a sewing pattern from AlphaPatterns, you’ll receive several downloadable files. Some of these files contain the same pattern, but arranged for different paper sizes.
The important thing to know is this: the sewing pattern itself does not change size.
A size 8 pattern, for example, will still be a size 8 whether you print it on A0, US Letter, or A4 paper. What changes is only how the pattern is divided across the pages.
A0 Size
The A0 file is the best option if you want to print your pattern at a copy shop or through an online pattern printing service.
A0 paper is much larger than regular home printer paper. It measures 841 x 1189 mm / 33.1 x 46.8 inches.
Because the paper is so large, the pattern pieces can fit on fewer sheets. This means you won’t have to print and tape together lots of small pages at home.
The only downside is that most home printers can’t print A0 files. You’ll usually need to take the file to a local copy shop or upload it to an online printing service.
If you don’t enjoy assembling tiled PDF patterns, the A0 file is usually the easiest option.
US Letter Size
The US Letter file is the one you’ll usually need if you’re printing at home in the United States.
US Letter paper measures 8.5 x 11 inches / 215.9 x 279.4 mm. It is also commonly used in Canada, Mexico, and some other countries.
If your printer uses Letter paper, choose the US Letter file.
This version of the pattern is divided across multiple Letter-size pages, so you can print it on a regular home printer. After printing, you’ll tape the pages together to create the full-size pattern.
Each pattern includes a page layout guide so you can see how the pages should be joined. The pattern pages also include letters and numbers to help you match everything in the correct order.
A4 Size
The A4 file is used for home printing in many countries outside the United States, including Spain, most of Europe, the UK, Australia, and many other places.
A4 paper measures 210 x 297 mm / 8.27 x 11.69 inches.
A4 and US Letter look very similar, but they are not the same size. That small difference is the reason why separate files are included.
If your printer uses A4 paper, choose the A4 file. Like the US Letter version, the pattern will be divided across several pages that you’ll print at home and tape together.

Why Are There Separate A4 and US Letter Files?
This is one of the most common questions with digital sewing patterns.
A4 and US Letter paper are very close in size, but not identical. If you print the wrong file on the wrong paper size, the pattern may still print, but the pages may not line up as neatly.
That’s why AlphaPatterns includes separate files for both formats. It helps make the printing and assembly process much easier.
Does the Pattern Size Change Between Files?
No. The pattern size stays the same.
Only the paper layout changes.
So if you print the correct file at the correct scale, the finished pattern will have the same measurements whether you choose A0, US Letter, or A4.
The most important thing is to print at 100% scale or Actual Size.
Avoid options like “Fit to Page”, “Scale to Fit”, or “Shrink Oversized Pages”, because these settings can make the pattern print smaller than it should.
Before printing the full pattern, I always recommend printing the test square page first. Measure the test square with a ruler, and if it’s correct, you can print the rest of the pages with confidence.
| File size | Best for | Where to print it | Paper size |
|---|---|---|---|
| A0 | Printing the pattern professionally and avoiding taped pages | Copy shop or online pattern printing service | 841 x 1189 mm / 33.1 x 46.8 in |
| US Letter | Home printing in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries that use Letter paper | Regular home printer | 8.5 x 11 in / 215.9 x 279.4 mm |
| A4 | Home printing in Spain, Europe, the UK, Australia, and most other countries | Regular home printer | 210 x 297 mm / 8.27 x 11.69 in |
Which Sewing Pattern File Should I Use?
Once you know which paper size your printer uses, you only need to print that version of the pattern. You can ignore the other paper-size files or delete them if you prefer.
I hope this helps you choose the right file for your sewing pattern. If you have any questions, you can leave them in the comments.
